Tips for Managing Your Swimming Pool, Hot Tub or Spa Water

Here you will find our top tips on what you need to know about managing your swimming pool, hot tub or spa water, and the products that will help you do it.

Swimming Pool Water Capacity

  • Before you can dose your swimming pool, hot tub or spa with the chemicals you need to keep the water clean, clear and hygienic, you must first find out the capacity of the water it holds.
  • We always recommend checking with the manufacturer but if you are unsure of the capacity of your swimming pool, use our Water Volume Calculation guide.

Units of Measurement

  • When calculating the amount of swimming pool, hot tub or spa chemicals you need, we recommend working in the same units of measurement as per the dosing instructions of your product.
  • To calculate volume from Metric to Imperial measurements, and vice versa, please click here for our Measurement Unit Conversion Tool.

Water Balance

Swimming

  • Maintaining the correct water balance of your swimming pool, hot tub or spa is essential for bather comfort, protecting equipment and effective chemical usage.
  • You should test your swimming pool, hot tub or spa regularly to check the water balance level. Frequent testing will identify any fluctuating parameters and help to identify what products you will need to get back on track. Pool Chemical Products has a huge range of Water Testing and Sampling Equipment to help you monitor your swimming pool, hot tub or spa water quickly and easily.
  • Products you will need to get your swimming pool, hot tub or spa water balance right can be found in our pH Balancers product category, including Alkalinity Builder, pH Minus and pH Plus.

Important Products

  • Before you can determine which chemicals you need for your swimming pool, hot tub or spa, the most important products you need include Water Testing and Sampling Equipment such as Test Strips or Test Kits.

TIP: Always record your test results and the chemical additions you make for reference, and again once you have retested the water following the dosing of chemicals to make sure the water has reached the correct balance.

The five main categories of chemical products you need for your swimming pool, hot tub or spa are:

  • Sanitizing agents: To kill unwanted micro-organisms in the pool water such as bacteria, viruses and algae. Our range of sanitizers includes Chlorine and Bromine in both granule and tablet form.
  • Shock treatments: Used for regular maintenance, particularly when bathing water has been untreated or neglected for long periods, to quickly destroy contaminants such as chloramines and algae. Our Shock Chlorine Granules are fast dissolving and have high available Chlorine.
  • Water balancers: To maintain the correct water balance levels for optimum bather comfort, protect the pool, hot tub or spa material from damage and allow the chemicals to work properly. Our water balancers include Alkalinity Builder, pH Minus and pH Plus.
  • Algaecide: For preventing, treating and ridding algae build up. Our Algaecide can be used as a shock treatment or for regular dosing.
  • Clarifiers: To keep your swimming pool, hot tub or spa water clean and clear and rectify cloudy pool water. Our Cleaners and Clarifiers are flocculants which make dirt and pollutants stick together for easy removal.
